Rat Control in Salem County, NJ

Family-Owned Rat Removal for Salem County Homes & Businesses Since 2009

Rats aren’t just a bigger version of a mouse problem. They’re more destructive, harder to manage, and capable of causing structural damage and serious health risks. A Norway rat can chew through wiring, burrow under a foundation, and contaminate food storage in the same night. Catching the problem early matters, and addressing it at the source requires a professional inspection, not a hardware store trap.

Preferred Termite & Pest has provided rat control in Salem County since 2009. Owner Brian Szymborski brings over 30 years of pest control experience to every job, and our team serves both residential and commercial properties across the county.

If you’re dealing with rats, don’t wait for the population to grow. Call us at (856) 880-7082 or use our online contact form to request a free estimate.

How Our Rat Control Process Works

We start every job with a comprehensive property inspection: locating entry points, identifying droppings and rub marks, finding burrow sites, and mapping where rat activity is concentrated. Without that groundwork, treatment is guesswork.

From there, we build a plan around your specific property and infestation level. Effective rodent control addresses three phases: managing the current population, sealing entry points so new rats can’t follow the same path inside, and ongoing monitoring to help keep the problem under control. Rats can squeeze through an opening as small as half an inch, so thoroughness in the exclusion phase isn’t optional.

Our methods follow integrated pest management (IPM) principles, selecting control strategies that are effective against the target pest while minimizing impact on people, pets, and the surrounding environment. We respond fast, because a rat infestation doesn’t improve with time.

Service plan flexibility is built into how we operate:

  • Scheduling options: Weekly, biweekly, monthly, bimonthly, and quarterly plans are available to match any infestation severity or ongoing prevention need.

Signs of a Rat Infestation in Your Home or Business

The Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus), also called the brown rat, is the species you’re most likely dealing with in New Jersey homes and businesses. Adults run 7 to 9 inches long with a 6 to 8-inch tail, shaggy brown fur with scattered black hairs, and a gray to yellowish-white belly. They’re built for staying hidden, which is why most people see the evidence long before they see the rats themselves.

Know what to look for:

  • Droppings: Capsule-shaped pellets with blunt ends, about 3/4 inch long, found along baseboards, in cabinets, or near food storage
  • Rub marks: Dark smudge marks along walls, beams, and pipes from oils secreted through the rat’s skin as it follows the same routes repeatedly
  • Gnaw marks: Damage to door frames, wall material, packaging, and stored items
  • Burrows: Smooth holes roughly 2 to 4 inches in diameter near foundations, beneath sheds, or along fence lines
  • Sounds: Scratching or movement in walls and ceilings, most often heard at night

Daytime sightings are worth taking seriously. Norway rats are nocturnal and most active around dusk and dawn, so a rat visible during the day often signals a large, well-established colony. Rat populations grow fast. A small infestation can become a major one in a matter of weeks.

Rat Prevention Steps Salem County Property Owners Can Take

These steps support professional treatment and help reduce re-infestation risk between service visits:

  • Seal entry points: Close gaps, cracks, and openings around foundations, pipes, and utility lines using steel mesh or hardware cloth
  • Secure food sources: Store food, including pet food, in airtight containers and eliminate accessible scraps
  • Eliminate moisture: Repair leaks, address standing water, and maintain proper drainage around the property
  • Reduce harborage: Clear debris piles, move woodpiles away from the structure, and cut back dense vegetation near the foundation
  • Use sealed trash containers: Keep waste in containers with tight-fitting lids and position them away from building entrances

These measures reduce the conditions that attract rats, but they don’t resolve an active infestation. If rats are already present, professional inspection and treatment are the right starting point.

Commercial Rat Control in Salem County

For food service operations, retail businesses, warehouses, and property managers, a rat infestation isn’t just a pest problem. It carries regulatory, reputational, and direct health consequences that make rapid response a business necessity. A single inspection finding or customer complaint tied to rodent activity can be costly and hard to walk back.

We serve commercial properties throughout Salem County with the same customized approach we apply to residential work: a thorough property inspection, identification of conditions enabling the infestation, and a service plan scaled to the scope of the problem. Our commercial rat control programs are built on the IPM framework, combining inspection, exclusion, targeted treatment, sanitation guidance, and ongoing monitoring. Weekly through quarterly scheduling options give commercial clients the monitoring frequency their operation requires.

Eco-Friendly Rat Control That Keeps Families & Pets Safe

Our approach to rat removal in Salem County is designed to be effective without being indiscriminate. We follow integrated pest management principles that favor methods least disruptive to non-target organisms and the surrounding environment. In practice, that means combining physical exclusion, targeted baiting with tamper-resistant stations, and sanitation guidance rather than broad chemical applications across the property.

We incorporate the latest advancements in pest control products and methods, and we select treatments with safety for people, pets, and the environment as a standing priority. Customers have noted that the products we use are pet-friendly. If you have questions about what a treatment plan could involve for your home or business, we’re happy to walk through it before any work begins. Call (856) 880-7082 or reach us through our online contact form.
